What Is Tricone Drill Bit consists of ?
- A roller cone or tricone rock bit consists of a bit body with three moveable conical rollers equipped with cemented carbide inserts.
- The idea is the crush the rock by rolling the inserts against the rock with appropriate rotation speed and feed force.
- Carbide inserts are distributed over the three rollers in such a manner that the entire bottom of the hole is worked on when the drill bit is rotated.
- Roller bits for hard and abrasive rock generally have spherical cemented carbide inserts closely spaced.
- Roller bits for softer rock may have the chisel and conical carbide teeth or quality milled steel teeth as the cutters.
- Three types of cemented carbide inserts are used for roller type bits being Chisel, Conical, and Hemispherical.
- A roller bit will utilize nozzles from which the compressed air escapes to lift the cuttings from the bottom of the hole.
All bits the above are manufactured according to strict standards, set forth by the American Petroleum Institute (API). And classified according to characteristics set forth by the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC).

Application
Tricone drill bit is one of the main tools for blast hole and well drilling, mainly used for large-scale open-pit mining, such as open-pit coal mines, iron mines, copper mines and molybdenum mines, also the non-metallic mines. With the increasing in variety of type, it’s also widely used in quarrying, foundation clearing, hydrogeological drilling, coring, tunneling in railway transportation department and shaft drilling in underground mines. The rock breakage by the tricone bit which used in mine is working with both the impact of teeth and the shear caused by slippage of the teeth, which bring high rock breaking efficiency and the low operation cost.
